With Mozart's 250th anniversary just round the corner, it is always a pleasure to review some of his solo piano music. This CD, issued by the relatively unknown label, Eroica, includes two pairs of popular sonatas and variations, but the Duport Variations are somewhat of a rarity, so this recording is most welcome if only for this work alone.

The Variations K. 573 were composed in 1789 after Mozart made the acquaintance of Jean Pierre Duport, a cellist of moderate popularity who today is mainly remembered because of this piece. The work is based on a theme from Duport's Cello Sonata #6 and has nine variations full of fresh and imaginative music. In the other four compositions that complete this recital, Mozart's unique genius creates a variety of moods and feelings so rich, that one is left entranced in a world of supreme beauty.

The Turkish pianist Zeynep Ucbasaran, who since 1996 has been living in California is fast becoming one of the foremost performers amongst today's legion of excellent pianists. In this album, she amply displays not only her great affinity with the composer, but also her innate sense of musicianship. Van Gogh's reproduction of 'A Vase with Violet arises against a Pink Background' on the front cover also caught my attention and sets the seal on an excellently played and recorded disc.
