One of the greatest virtuosi in his time, Ignaz Moscheles also wrote a substantial body of concertos (eight in all) which Hyperion are promising to issue in their entirety. On the evidence of these first two barnstormers, this will be one of the most eagerly awaited projects for the piano lover.

The Second Concerto includes some outstandingly memorable tunes in the opening Allegro moderato that then gives way to a tranquil and serene Adagio with a beautiful piano part. The Finale is in Polish tempo, so popularized by Chopin who would certainly have applauded this fine work.

The Third Concerto is more refined and compact yet lacks nothing in vigour and momentum all around. The aptly titled, 'Anticipations of Scotland' is a wonderful work, full of beautiful poetry and relaxed tone painting. Howard Shelley and his Tasmanian players are completely at one with this easy effortlessly relaxed music and the whole project definitely deserves a sincere thumbs-up.
